What is your Song?
Other day there was a talk-demonstration by Maushumi Bhowmik about folk music of Bengal. It was quite a thought provoking. Let me share some of them.
Key motif of Folk music is a sense of travel, both physical and spiritual. A traveler desires to record the experience, stories and communicate them to others . Also others join in and celebrate the moments of togetherness in the journey.
There is nothing pure about folk music. It is always in a state of dynamic change, to stay relevant with the time, place and people. It absorbs musical influences in its way and stay true to the present.
In folk music, the singer and the listener are the same. Others can listen but that’s not the purpose. People sing alone or together while working, while traveling, the utterance is more important than the performance.
In Design Research, we need to give more importance to music than we do. It not only revel the history of the person but may point to her latent desires. The i- pod holds much more than music, provided we learn to read them.
What is my song? Is my ‘travel story’ is written in my CD collection, in the worn out button of my ‘world space’ remote.
